Nasarawa State has become the latest state to take control of its electricity market from the federal government, following an official handover by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission.
The transfer makes Nasarawa the 12th state in Nigeria to begin regulating its own electricity supply under the 2023 Electricity Act.
NERC announced the move in a post on X, saying it was in line with the amended Nigerian Constitution and the new electricity law. It confirmed that the Nasarawa State Electricity Regulatory Commission will now oversee electricity matters in the state.
NERC also instructed the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company to set up a new branch that will focus only on supplying and distributing electricity within Nasarawa State. The company has been given 60 days, starting from August 4, 2025, to create the new unit.
“All transfers envisaged by the order, NERC says, are to be completed by 3rd February 2026,” the commission stated.
The shift is part of a wider move by Nigerian states to take charge of their power supply. Before Nasarawa, other states like Lagos, Edo, Ekiti, Imo, Kogi, Enugu, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, and Oyo had already received regulatory powers from NERC.
The commission also revealed that Plateau State will receive full electricity regulatory control by September 12, 2025. Abia and Delta states have already signaled readiness to follow soon.
