The president of Napoli, Aurelio De Laurentiis, has shared his perspective on the future of the Super League.

“I spoke to Florentino Pérez and we agree on meeting with other entrepreneurs to discuss about future plans”.

“Football is being managed by old people with no vision”, he told Corriere dello Sport.

Notably, Napoli is among the few clubs that supported the European Court’s decision on the Super League and expressed readiness to participate in it.

De Laurentiis envisions an ideal tournament featuring 7-8 of the strongest teams in Europe, along with squads displaying significant potential.

He suggests a closed format with 14 participating teams, reminiscent of the NBA structure, eliminating the need for eliminations.

“In such a tournament there could not be teams like Palermo and Bari. The tournament should be closed and include 14 teams, without eliminations, as is done in the NBA.

In his proposal, De Laurentiis recommends excluding teams like Palermo and Bari, emphasizing the competitive nature of the tournament. Additionally, he advocates for the creation of two Serie A groups of 20 teams below the top tier, allowing for a tiered structure.

Presently, Barcelona and Real Madrid are active participants in the Super League, although many initially interested teams have since abandoned the idea. De Laurentiis’ vision aligns with the ongoing discussions surrounding the restructuring and potential revival of the Super League concept.
