Napoli apologizes for mockery video of Victor Osimhen

Published

Napoli has released an official statement apologizing for a video posted on its official TikTok page that was interpreted by many as a mockery of Nigerian star striker Victor Osimhen.

The video, which has since been deleted, showed Osimhen asking for the ball during a penalty shootout, followed by a sped-up voice saying “give me penalty, please” over footage of Osimhen celebrating a goal.

Many fans were outraged by the video, and Osimhen himself deleted all Napoli-related posts from his Instagram account in response.

In its statement, Napoli said that it “never wanted to offend or mock Victor Osimhen, who is a treasure of this club.”

The club added that it “firmly rebuffed every offer that was received for the striker’s transfer abroad” during the summer training retreat.

Napoli went on to say that social media, in particular TikTok, “has always used an expressive form of language with a light heart and creativity,” and that it did not intend to insult or deride Osimhen.

In any case, if Victor perceived any offence towards him, this was not what the club intended,” the statement said.

Osimhen has not publicly commented on the apology, but he did score in Napoli’s 4-1 win over Udinese on Wednesday.
