The National Association of Nigerian Students has appealed to the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress to postpone their proposed strike for the nation’s benefit.
NANS National President, Mr. Pedro Obi, conveyed this appeal during a news conference in Abeokuta on Saturday.
NLC and TUC had issued a 14-day nationwide strike notice to the government on February 8, citing the failure to implement agreements reached on October 2, following the removal of the fuel subsidy.
Mr. Obi acknowledged the shared pains of Nigerians, especially the youth and student community, amidst the ongoing hardships. He expressed concern that the planned strike could exacerbate the country’s economic crisis.
While recognizing the unions’ right to demand and strike for their rights, Mr. Obi urged them to reconsider, emphasizing the potential negative impact on security, the economy, and most importantly, students’ academic progress nationwide.
“While recognising the importance of addressing labour-related concerns and advocating for workers’ rights, we kindly urge the labour unions to explore alternative means of dialogue and negotiation with the relevant authorities.
“A strike, though a powerful tool, can lead to civil unrest and further worsen the security and economic situation of the country,” he said.
Furthermore, he urged the Federal Government to expedite the implementation of the new minimum wage, emphasizing its significance in addressing the people’s plight.
