Namibia’s President, Hage Geingob, has passed away at the age of 82 while undergoing medical treatment in Windhoek, the capital.

The Vice-President, Nangolo Mbumba, confirmed the sad news in a statement, saying, “At his side was his dear wife Madame Monica Geingos and his children.”

Geingob, who revealed his cancer diagnosis last month, had been receiving treatment in the US.

However, he did not survive, and his death was confirmed on Sunday morning. The President had returned to Namibia on February 2 after undergoing medical care abroad.

President Geingob took office in 2015 and was serving his second and final term. He underwent an aortic operation last year and had previously disclosed his survival of prostate cancer in 2014.

Namibia is preparing for presidential and parliamentary elections scheduled for November.

The governing Swapo party, which has been in power since the country gained independence in 1990, has chosen Mrs. Nandi-Ndaitwah as its presidential candidate. If successful, she will become Namibia’s first female president.
