The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ola Olukoyede, has urged Nigerians to avoid hasty conclusions over the recent allegation of naira abuse involving ex-militant leader and prominent Niger Delta figure, Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo.

Olukoyede’s remarks followed public outcry triggered by a viral video from Tompolo’s 54th birthday celebration, in which a man was seen spraying ₦1,000 notes on the celebrant.

The footage prompted criticism and calls for the EFCC to take swift action.

Speaking during an interview on TVC on Sunday, the EFCC chairman confirmed that Tompolo has been formally invited by the commission but stressed the need for due process.

“We have invited Tompolo, and every Nigerian is aware of that. No one is above the law,” Olukoyede said.

“However, we must not rush to condemn anyone based on allegations alone. The matter is still under investigation.”

He also revealed that the commission is subjecting the video to forensic analysis to verify its authenticity.

“These days, with digital manipulation, videos can easily be altered. That is why we are taking a forensic approach to ascertain the facts,” Olukoyede noted. “Until the investigation is concluded, we cannot determine guilt or innocence. Everyone deserves a fair hearing.”

The EFCC chairman’s comments appear aimed at addressing concerns over perceived selective justice, as some Nigerians had accused the agency of inaction due to Tompolo’s influence.

Olukoyede reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to impartiality.

“It’s a mere allegation for now,” he reiterated. “We will follow due process and ensure that justice is served transparently.”
