The Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, Professor Abdullahi Usman, has resigned from his position.

His Technical Assistant Media, Ahmad Mu’azu, confirmed the development to The PUNCH on Tuesday but said the exact circumstances were still unclear.

“Yes, he has resigned, but I am still waiting for him to communicate his reasons, because he just sent a one-line message to us last night (Monday night), informing us of his resignation. I think proper communication will be done this morning,” Mu’azu stated.

The resignation comes amid reports that the NAHCON board had submitted a petition to President Bola Tinubu calling for Usman’s removal over alleged abuses and misconduct.

In a petition dated January 19, 2026, signed by 11 board members and titled “Vote of No Confidence in the Chairman,” the board accused Usman of financial indiscipline, lack of transparency, and repeatedly awarding contracts and spending funds without board approval, exceeding budgetary limits.

The board stated that persistent leadership failures had compromised the credibility, stability, and operational effectiveness of the commission.

Before his resignation, Usman’s last official engagement was last week when he received Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Hajj and Umrah, Dr. Tawfiq Al-Rabiah, in Abuja.

Professor Abdullahi Usman was appointed NAHCON chairman by President Tinubu in 2024.
