The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has cautioned frozen food sellers against selling unregistered and banned products.
The warning came during a one-day sensitisation programme held on Friday at Kado Fish Market, Abuja, the largest fish market in North-Central Nigeria.
NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, represented by Mr. Kenneth Azikiwe, Director of the FCT Directorate, stressed the importance of supporting local farmers and producers of frozen food to boost the economy.
“This programme is designed to ensure good storage and distribution practices in the market because properly stored food products maintain quality before consumption,” she said.
Prof. Adeyeye assured the public of NAFDAC’s commitment to fighting the illegal sale of unregistered food, water, and other products. She added, “The initiative is aimed at protecting public health, especially during this festive period.”
She also reminded market sellers to prioritize locally produced frozen food that is registered with NAFDAC, ensuring consumer safety.
Prof. Adeyeye warned, “Anyone found violating the Federal Government’s ban on the importation of frozen chicken, turkey, and catfish will face strict enforcement actions.”
Alhaji Ibrahim Mohammed, Chairman of the Frozen Food Sellers Association at Kado Fish Market, praised the programme and pledged the group’s support.
“We will comply with these regulations to promote the well-being of Nigerians,” he said, appealing to NAFDAC for fair enforcement of policies.
Meanwhile, NAFDAC has also inspected water production factories in the Federal Capital Territory to ensure compliance with hygienic standards and proper manufacturing practices for sachet and table water producers.
