NAFDAC shuts down Prophet Jeremiah ‘miracle water’ factory in Delta

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has sealed Globod Table Water factory in Delta State for allegedly producing and selling unregistered “miracle water” with a fake NAFDAC registration number.

The factory, located at Km 4 DSC Expressway, Otokutu, was reportedly working with Christ Mercy Land Delivery Ministries, led by Prophet Jeremiah Omoto, to make the products.

NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, said in a statement on Sunday that the agency had received many complaints from concerned citizens about the miracle water being advertised and sold by the faith-based group. “NAFDAC wishes to alert the public to the activities of a faith-based organisation—Christ Mercy Land Delivery Ministries—that uses NAFDAC’s name to deceive the unsuspecting public,” Adeyeye said.

The complaints included claims of miracle water and miracle soap being advertised as cures for various conditions, such as barrenness. Prophet Omoto allegedly showed these products on social media, telling women that they would conceive twins if they used the soap, and falsely claiming that the products were registered with NAFDAC. “The minister showcased the use of miracle water and miracle soap on social media to heal barrenness. He claimed that the women would carry twins if they used the soap. He openly told his congregation that the soap is NAFDAC registered,” Adeyeye added.

NAFDAC’s investigation found no records of registration or transactions with Christ Mercy Land Deliverance Ministries for the advertised products. The agency’s Delta State Coordinator visited the ministry and was able to purchase the miracle water for N3,000. However, when questioned, ministry officials denied producing the miracle water despite evidence to the contrary. “The officials denied producing miracle and healing water or soap even with the evidence of the receipt of purchase,” Adeyeye said.

On August 27, 2024, a joint team from NAFDAC and the Federal Task Force on Counterfeit and Fake Drugs visited the ministry to investigate the source of the products but faced non-cooperation from the ministry officials. Letters of invitation to meet for further investigation were not honored, and instead, the ministry submitted legal documents requesting more time. “The Investigation and Enforcement team waited for the Christ Mercy Land Delivery Ministries officials based on their earlier request to report for commencement of the investigation, but they still refused to show up,” Adeyeye explained.

The ministry later claimed it had a production contract with Globod Table Water, but this was done without NAFDAC’s knowledge, which is illegal. NAFDAC then sealed the Globod Table Water factory for its involvement in producing and selling the unregistered miracle water.

“In continuation of our investigation, NAFDAC Investigation and Enforcement has sealed Globod Table Water factory for aiding and abetting the production, sale, and advertisement of unregistered and unwholesome Miracle Water under the pretext of Fake NAFDAC Registration Number,” Adeyeye said.

NAFDAC warned the public that none of the products advertised by the ministry are registered and advised against purchasing them. “NAFDAC is a scientific organisation that is guided by verifiable scientific facts before registering any product,” Adeyeye stressed, adding that the agency will continue investigating the ministry’s activities and will take action against any faith organizations involved in illegal production of regulated products.

Prof. Adeyeye reassured Nigerians of NAFDAC’s commitment to safeguarding public health, saying, “I want to use this opportunity to warn either faith organisations against illegal production of the regulated product without requisite regulatory requirements.”
