The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control on Thursday sealed an eatery in Abuja due to poor hygiene standards.

The agency found food raw materials suspected to be contaminated with rodent droppings and faeces, along with unhygienic packaging practices.

The Head of NAFDAC’s FCT Directorate, Mr. Kenneth Azikiwe, revealed that the agency acted on a tip from a concerned customer and an order from Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye. He said, “The operation is aimed at promoting public health safety and ensuring safe, quality food for Nigerian citizens.”

Azikiwe emphasized that all restaurants must follow NAFDAC’s Food Hygiene Regulations to ensure safe food processing. He explained that NAFDAC will assess the eatery’s premises, staff, and sources of raw materials before deciding on penalties.

“NAFDAC will impose penalties based on its regulations for poor hygiene practices,” he added.

Azikiwe also encouraged other restaurant operators in Abuja to get certified by NAFDAC and follow the necessary food safety guidelines. He urged them to visit NAFDAC’s office or website for more information.
