NAFDAC refutes reports of Lagos office shutdown amid protest

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has dismissed reports claiming its Lagos office was shut down on Thursday following a protest.

The demonstration was reportedly linked to the agency’s recent enforcement of regulations banning the sale and consumption of alcohol in sachets and glass bottles of 200ml or less.

In a statement issued by its management, NAFDAC described the reports of a shutdown as “false and misleading.”

“We categorically state that this report is false and misleading. The protest, which occurred outside the NAFDAC premises, did not disrupt operations in any way. Our offices remain fully open, and all staff are carrying out their duties without interruption,” the statement read.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to public health and its regulatory mandate, emphasizing that enforcement of the ban on sachet alcohol remains active despite objections from parts of the manufacturing sector and labour unions.

NAFDAC urged the public and media outlets to verify information before publication and to disregard reports suggesting otherwise.
