The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has officially launched the NAFDAC Green Book. This comprehensive repository contains detailed information on 7,030 NAFDAC-registered drug products.
The book launch, which occurred at NAFDAC’s office in Lagos on Wednesday, brought together stakeholders, including representatives from the Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria and the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria.
During the event, the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof Moji Adeyeye, emphasized the importance of transparency as a fundamental aspect of NAFDAC’s identity and highlighted the agency’s commitment to safeguarding the well-being of Nigerians.
Comparable to the US FDA’s Orange Book, the NAFDAC Green Book serves as a dynamic database consolidating detailed data on registered products.
Adeyeye noted that the book is a work in progress, with vaccines currently being added, followed by other products.
The Director-General expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders, stating, “Today’s launch is a collaborative effort between NAFDAC and various stakeholders, underscoring the importance of partnerships in advancing public health. It reflects our shared commitment to building a robust, sustainable healthcare workforce framework for pharmaceutical oversight and ensuring that Nigerians have access to safe and effective medicines.”
She encouraged stakeholders to view the Green Book as a symbol of progress, guiding the nation toward a future characterized by transparency, accountability, and the well-being of citizens.
Adeyeye also announced ongoing initiatives to introduce certification plaques for licensed and compliant operators, serving as a mark of quality assurance.
During the launch, the Head of the ICT Unit, Mr. Olufemi Balogun, introduced the NAFDAC Green Book app, which provides a comprehensive list of all NAFDAC-approved medicines.
The app includes information such as names, strengths, dosage forms, route of administration, ATC classification, and other marketing authorization details. The Deputy Director of e-registration and data management, Dr. Dumoi Afam, highlighted the importance of the database, stating, “Our DG came up with the idea of us having a one-stock shop database where we can see all products that are registered by NAFDAC, starting with medicine, because it is very critical to public health.”
The NAFDAC Green Book aims to empower healthcare professionals, patients, and the general public with reliable and accurate information about medicines certified as safe for use.
