The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control apprehended five Abuja individuals for selling counterfeit cosmetics.

The arrests, which occurred in the Garki and Wuse areas during an enforcement operation aimed at curbing the sale of substandard goods, underscore NAFDAC’s commitment to safeguarding public health and eradicating counterfeit products from the market.

Addressing reporters after the enforcement, the Head of Investigation and Enforcement at the Federal Taskforce of NAFDAC, Mr. Embugushiki-Musa Godiya, affirmed that the arrested individuals would undergo thorough investigation.

Godiya reiterated NAFDAC’s determination to eliminate fake cosmetics and other counterfeit items from circulation across the country. He noted that despite stringent security measures at the borders, some counterfeit products managed to enter the country illegally.

“NAFDAC is present in all the ports of entry of the country, but with the nature of our borders, these smugglers will always find a way to beat the system that the government had put in place,” Godiya explained.

Highlighting the magnitude of the seized cosmetics, valued at N35 million, Godiya emphasized that NAFDAC would continue its investigation to ascertain the extent of the suspects’ involvement.

Following the investigation, NAFDAC management will take regulatory action, which may include prosecuting the suspects for their alleged involvement in the crime.
