The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has shut down the Gomboru drug market in Maiduguri, Borno State.

This action comes after a devastating flood caused by the rupture of the Alau dam on the Ngadda River.

NAFDAC announced the closure on its X page, stating, “After the recent flooding in Maiduguri that submerged the Gomboru drug market where contaminated drugs were washed and sun-dried for resale, the @DGatNAFDAC ordered the immediate closure of the market to conduct a thorough shop-to-shop removal of these compromised drugs.”

The flooding has been catastrophic, claiming at least 30 lives and displacing around 400,000 people. Ezekiel Manzo, a spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency, confirmed, “The death toll is 30,” following reports of water sweeping away thousands of homes in the city.

Zubaida Umar, another NEMA official, described the situation, saying, “The flood has taken over around 40 percent of the entire city. People have been forced out of their homes and are scattered everywhere.”

He added, “From our statistics, we have 414,000 displaced people,” and warned that this number could reach one million.
