Covid-19: NAFDAC tackles Bala Mohammed on the use of chloroquine
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, on Friday, said it has not granted approval for the use of any drug as a treatment for Coronavirus in the country.
Recall that Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State had on Wednesday directed health workers in the state to use chloroquine and Zithromax for the treatment of COVID-19 patients in the state.
The governor, who gave the directive while meeting with COVID-19 frontline health workers at the Government House, Bauchi, said he was treated with chloroquine and Zithromax when he tested positive for the virus.
Mr Mohammed stressed that he was ready to take responsibility for any consequences of approving such drugs.
He said: “Our medical team is using their own ingenuity to use chloroquine and Zithromax to treat the patients, even though in some places, they said it is against the protocol.
“As the governor, I’m taking responsibility for that because I don’t want anyone to die.”
Reacting to the directive through a statement, the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, said the agency had not given its approval for the use of any product from any company or individual to cure COVID-19.
She said, “The agency is concerned about reports on social and other media of drugs or vaccines to cure COVID 19.
“The agency has not granted any approval to any products for use as a cure or vaccine against COVID 19.

“The public is advised to comply with measures issued by the NCDC to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
“These include the use of face coverings/masks in addition to social distancing, washing of hands and use of alcohol-based sanitisers.”
Recall that the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, and the Director-General of the Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, Chikwe Ihekweazu, had said that the World Health Organisation, WHO had not come up with any cure for COVID-19.
They said that despite claims of traditional remedies by people, the Nigerian Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development had yet to come up with a result.
