My father once called comedy a stupid business — Sabinus

Comedian Emmanuel Ejekwu, known widely as Sabinus, says his father once regretted paying his school fees after finding out he had become a skit maker.

Speaking in an interview with VJ Adams, Sabinus explained that his father wanted him to study law, but he could not secure admission for the course.

He later gained admission to study Linguistics and Communication Studies at the University of Port Harcourt.

He said it was during his time on campus that he discovered his talent for comedy and began making skits.

He said, “At first, my dad never wanted me to be what I am today, he wanted me to be a lawyer. I tried my best but I couldn’t secure a law admission. So, I had to settle for Linguistics and Communication Studies at Uniport.”

He noted that his father had no idea he was doing comedy until after his graduation.

He said, “It was on the campus that I saw skit making and I decided to try it out. Money wasn’t coming. After I graduated, my dad never knew I was a comedian because I was hiding it. It was one more year after school that he started seeing me on comedy show posters.”

Sabinus said his sisters confirmed it to their father, who reacted angrily.

He recalled his father’s words: “Which comedy? Stupid business. Look at the boy I sent to become a lawyer.”

He added that the tension eased only after he started earning from comedy and began gifting money to his father.

According to him, his father later accepted his career and gave him his blessings.
