Nigerian singer Reekado Banks has opened up about his exit from Mavin Records, admitting that he left the label too early.
The singer, who gained fame after joining Mavin Records in 2014 and winning the Rookie of the Year at The Headies that same year, said he did not fully understand the weight of his decision until he stepped out on his own. He later won the controversial Next Rated award at The Headies in 2015.
Reekado, whose real name is Ayoleyi Solomon, left Mavin in 2018 to start his own record label, Banks Music. Speaking in a recent interview with reality star Teddy A on Echoo Room, he explained that his decision was not caused by any fight with the label.
“It [my exit from Mavin Records] wasn’t a conflict situation. I was pretty young and pretty fixated on what I wanted to do – I wanted to leave. Anyways, my contract has ended two years prior. I signed a three-year contract and I allowed it to ride for another two years. So, I was there for five years without reviewing the contract,” he said.
The singer added that he quickly realised how tough the music industry could be when he started running his own business.
“So, when it was time, I thought I wanted to do this [leave] now. I thought I could do it now. I just embarked on the journey, as many people would view it, prematurely. As soon as I jumped into the sea as well, I realised how premature it was,” Reekado admitted.
