Mutfwang’s defection to APC was voluntary, strategic – Ex-Speaker

Former Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Istifanus Mwansat, has maintained that Governor Caleb Mutfwang was not pressured into joining the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Mwansat made the assertion on Tuesday during an interview on Politics Today, a programme aired on Channels Television, where he described the governor’s decision as well-considered and appropriate.

Governor Mutfwang officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the APC on Tuesday, a development that has continued to generate political reactions across the state.

“Plateau people are with Governor Mutfwang, he was not arm-twisted to join APC. His defection to APC was the best.

“He does not need an automatic ticket, because the people are with him. Any time any day Mutfwang will contest elections, twice or thrice, he will win those elections I can assure you.

“For me, it goes with neither here nor there. Why would anybody attempt to coerce Governor Mutfwang to move into the APC? Why would anybody arm-twist him? There’s basically no reason. This is out of his own volition. And of course, strategic placement and positioning, as it were.

“This is politics. The dynamics of politics, of course, is manifested because you cannot continue to be dogmatic or static when you notice that it is evidently clear that the platform on which you were elected is relatively sick. And of course, the period of recovery is not within your control.

“Therefore, it is even scriptural that a wise person sees danger from afar and takes a detour to avoid whatever lies ahead.

“And I think the Governor as a wise person, as a good leader, has seen danger ahead. And therefore his decision to move into the APC becomes the best option for us in the circumstance,” he said.
