Musk expresses regret over harsh criticism of Trump

Tech billionaire Elon Musk has publicly apologized for his recent strong criticisms of United States President Donald Trump, saying some of his comments “went too far.”

This comes after days of heated exchanges between the former allies that shocked Washington.

“I regret some of my posts about President Trump last week. They went too far,” Musk wrote on his social media platform X on Wednesday.

The conflict started when Musk, who was Trump’s biggest campaign donor in 2024, strongly criticized a major spending bill supported by the president. Some Republican lawmakers had asked Musk to fund challenges against party members voting for the bill.

Trump responded angrily, telling NBC News: “He’ll have to pay very serious consequences if he does that.” The president also called Musk “disrespectful” and said he had no plans to repair their relationship.

The fight became more intense when Musk suggested Trump might be named in unreleased documents about Jeffrey Epstein, the disgraced financier accused of sex trafficking. Musk later deleted these posts without explanation.

Earlier this year, Musk had worked closely with Trump as an advisor on government efficiency before leaving the position. Their recent public disagreement surprised many, especially after Trump had praised Musk when he left the role.

“Without me, Trump would have lost the election,” Musk had claimed during their argument, adding that Republicans would have had a smaller Senate majority. Trump later suggested cutting government contracts with Musk’s companies could save billions.

By Friday, both men seemed to soften their positions, with Trump telling reporters “I just wish him well,” and Musk responding “Likewise.”
