Nigerian songstress, Tiwa Savage, has opened up about the challenges she faces in the music industry, describing it as “filled with so much darkness.”
The singer, known for hits like “You 4 Me,” shared her thoughts during a candid Instagram Live session, revealing that her faith in God has kept her grounded amidst the difficulties she encounters.
“This industry is filled with so much darkness. I wish you guys knew, so much darkness. But I thank God that I’ve kept my eyes on Him. I haven’t fallen,” Tiwa said, reflecting on the struggles she has faced throughout her career.
The artist also spoke about the skepticism surrounding her recent album, This One Is Personal, noting that many people dismissed the record due to its lack of “big-name features.” Despite the criticism, Tiwa remained confident in her decision to stay true to her artistry and create a vulnerable project, steering away from the typical club bangers.
“When I put out the track list of my album, I saw so many people saying I didn’t feature the big names from America or the A-listers,” she explained. “They just automatically concluded that because I don’t have those features on the album, it’s not going to be good.”
Tiwa, however, emphasized that she values having the right supporters rather than a massive fan base. “I don’t need millions of fans, I just need the right ones,” she said. “Honestly, having you guys is enough for me.”
The singer also shared that creating This One Is Personal was a long and challenging journey. “It took over two years, and now it’s out. There were so many hurdles I wish I could tell you guys about—the fights, the challenges, the people who doubted me,” she revealed. “They said it wasn’t going to work, that nobody would listen or care.”
Reflecting on the pressures of the industry, she continued, “People just want to hear gbedu, bangers, and club records. I don’t have any club records, and they said it wasn’t going to work, that people wouldn’t stream it.”
Earlier in January, Tiwa Savage had made a similar remark, describing the music industry as “filled with dangerous sharks.” Despite the obstacles, the artist remains resolute in her dedication to her music and the loyal supporters who continue to stand by her.
