Several residents have sustained injuries while an unspecified number of people are feared dead following a series of bomb explosions that struck Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, on Monday evening.
According to emergency officials and local sources, the blasts occurred at multiple locations across the city, including the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, as well as densely populated commercial hubs such as Monday Market and the Post Office area.
Authorities disclosed that the explosions took place at about 7:00 p.m., shortly after iftar, the evening meal that breaks the Ramadan fast.
Security personnel and emergency response teams were promptly dispatched to the affected locations to conduct rescue operations and secure the environment.
Videos shared by eyewitnesses on social media captured scenes of chaos, with injured individuals being evacuated to medical facilities.
Some victims were reportedly transported using tricycles before receiving treatment.
The National Emergency Management Agency confirmed that victims are currently receiving medical attention.
However, officials noted that the exact number of casualties remains unclear as ongoing rescue efforts continue.
While no group has officially claimed responsibility for the attacks, there are suspicions that extremist organisations such as Boko Haram or ISWAP may be behind the incident, given their history of carrying out similar assaults in northeastern Nigeria.
