Mpox has now spread to 25 states and the Federal Capital Territory, affecting 63 local government areas across Nigeria.
This is according to a situation report released by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention on Tuesday.
The report revealed that 94 confirmed Mpox cases have been recorded from 1,297 suspected instances between January 1 and October 6, 2024. In the most recent Epidemiology Week 40, 47 new suspected cases were reported, compared to 67 suspected cases from the previous week. Six new confirmed cases were recorded in Week 40, down from 10 in Week 39.
“Twenty-five states and the FCT have reported at least one confirmed case across 63 LGAs in 2024,” the NCDC report stated.
Since September 2017, a total of 5,114 suspected Mpox cases have been reported in Nigeria, with 1,180 confirmed cases (23.1%) from 35 states and the FCT, resulting in 17 deaths.
The report noted that males comprise approximately 70% of the confirmed cases.
The National Mpox Emergency Operation Centre, a multi-sectoral and multi-partner effort, continues coordinating the national response to the outbreak.
Among the states with confirmed cases in 2024 are Cross River (11), Lagos (10), Plateau (8), Enugu (8), Akwa Ibom (8), Delta (6), Bayelsa (6), FCT (5), Imo (4), and Benue (4). Other states with confirmed cases include Rivers (3), Abia (3), Osun (2), Ogun (2), Edo (2), Anambra (2), and Zamfara (1), among others.
In terms of suspected cases, Ogun leads with 222 suspected cases, followed by Lagos (153), Bayelsa (125), Cross River (84), and Akwa Ibom (65). Other states with notable numbers of suspected cases include Enugu (59), Osun (56), Ondo (41), Delta (38), and Imo (36).
The age distribution of confirmed cases in 2024 indicates that those aged 21-30 have the highest number of confirmed cases (25), followed by ages 0-10 (24 cases) and ages 11-20 (15 cases). Individuals aged 31-40 accounted for 14 confirmed cases, ages 41-50 recorded 12 cases, and ages 50 and above recorded four cases.
The NCDC continues its efforts to track, manage, and contain the outbreak nationwide, working closely with state and local health authorities.
