Real Madrid have appointed José Mourinho as head coach for a second spell, more than a decade after the Portuguese manager first left the club.

According to ESPN, Real Madrid confirmed on Thursday that Mourinho has signed a three year contract following the departure of Álvaro Arbeloa. The appointment comes after a season in charge of Benfica, with reports indicating that Madrid agreed to pay €15 million to release him from his contract with the Portuguese club.

Mourinho’s return fulfils one of the key promises made by Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez during his successful re election campaign. The club is hoping the experienced manager can restore its fortunes after consecutive seasons without a major trophy.

The 63 year old previously managed Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, winning one La Liga title, a Copa del Rey and a Spanish Supercopa. He also guided the club to three successive UEFA Champions League semi finals during his first tenure.

Since leaving the Spanish giants, Mourinho has coached Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Roma, Fenerbahçe and Benfica, building one of the most extensive managerial careers in European football.

Real Madrid are looking to bounce back after disappointing campaigns under Carlo Ancelotti, Xabi Alonso and Álvaro Arbeloa, with Mourinho now tasked with leading the club back to domestic and European success.

The Portuguese coach arrives at the Bernabéu with a reputation for winning trophies and managing high pressure environments, qualities Madrid will hope can help return the club to the top of world football.
