A former Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority, Chief George Moughalu, has secured the Labour Party’s nomination for the Anambra State governorship election set for November 8, 2025.
Moughalu won the party’s primary election, polling a total of 573 votes to defeat his sole rival, John Nwosu, who garnered 19 votes. The primary was held on Saturday at Finotel Hotel, Awka.
The election, which was monitored by officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission and electoral observers, saw 649 delegates participate, with 601 accredited.
A total of 592 valid votes were cast, while five votes were deemed invalid.
In his acceptance speech, Moughalu reached out to his opponent, calling for unity among stakeholders. He stressed that with collective effort, their victory in the November election was assured.
Moughalu expressed his readiness to challenge the incumbent Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, emphasizing that his experience and capacity in public service and politics made him a strong contender. “I thank the party for ensuring a level playing field. And I thank the people for the confidence they repose in the party. We have to go to work to sell the Labour Party agenda that it is for the benefit of the whole Anambra people,” Moughalu said.
He further emphasized the potential of Anambra, stating, “Anambra is a blessed state, it is not lacking in human and natural resources. All we need to do is to ensure a level playing field by harnessing the potential for the good of the state.”
Moughalu vowed to inspire confidence within the party as they move forward in the campaign. “I am going to inspire confidence in the party as we march on towards the governorship race. We have a task of rebuilding the state and ensuring the people are given a voice. The Labour Party is still a strong force to be reckoned with, and we are going like a moving train to better Anambra,” he said.
The Returning Officer for the primary, Bennett Etanabena, commended the peaceful conduct of the election and encouraged all stakeholders to rally behind the party. “Anambra is a Labour Party state, we have two senators already, and available statistics indicate that Anambra is destined to produce the next President come 2027, and by virtue of that, this state will surely produce the next governor,” Etanabena added.
