The newly elected President of the Confederation of African Football, Patrice Motsepe, has charged African teams to bring home the prestigious World Cup trophy.

The 59-year-old Motsepe gave the charge on Tuesday during a press conference in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Africa made its breakthrough appearance in 1934 with Egypt but since the inception of the world Cup in 1930, the farthest an African team has ever gone is the quarter-finals of the World Cup through Cameroon (1990), Senegal (2002) and Ghana (2010) when South Africa hosted the tournament.

Although no African side has ever gone beyond such stage, Motsepe believes that it is time for Africa to win the World Cup.

Speaking on Tuesday, the South African billionaire said, “An African team must win the World Cup in the near future.

“We must stop being excessively pessimistic and negative (about the World Cup), there is no continent that has succeeded by dwelling on its failures.”

“I am confident African football will succeed, become self-sufficient, and the best in the world,” predicted the owner of 2016 CAF Champions League winners Mamelodi Sundowns.

With the CAF president’s conviction, Africa would be aiming for glory at the next World Cup in Qatar 2022, having failed woefully in Russia three years ago.

Recall that all five nations from Africa, including Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal and Tunisia failed to make it beyond the group stage.
