Motorists decry deplorable condition of Kano-Gwarzo-Dayi Road

Published

Some motorists plying Kano-Gwarzo-Dayi Road on Monday expressed concern over the deplorable condition of the road.

They stated in separate interviews in Kano that the road which linked Nigeria with Niger Republic had become a death trap.

The Kano-Gwarzo-Dayi Road is also the major link among four states including Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara and Kebbi.

Apart from these four states, the road also links Kano State with Niger Republic through Sokoto State.

One of the motorists, Abubakar Ahmed, said that due to the deplorable state of the road, the number of accidents being recorded had increased.

“The condition of the road has now deteriorated to the extent that it records accident on daily basis, thereby leading to loss of lives and properties,’’ he said.

“Most of the potholes that have been patched along the road last year had already gone off thereby causing accident on a daily basis.

“The road needs total rehabilitation, not filling of the potholes as carried out last year,’’ Ahmed said.

He said that the Federal Government had, in 2018 carried out rehabilitation of some dilapidated portions of the road, but that the patched portions had gone worse again.

He said the patching of potholes was done through a direct labour work conducted by the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA).

“As I am talking to you, most of the patched potholes had gone off thereby making it difficult for motorists plying the road to move easily.

Another motorist, Ibrahim Salisu, said the Federal Government needed to ensure total overhaul of the road in order to boost social and economic activities of the people living in the area.

According to him, if the road is rehabilitated, it will also go a long way in reducing the number of accidents being recorded on the road.

“When the road is fully rehabilitated, it will boost socio-economic activities of the communities through the attraction of more investors as there will be no risk of accident as a result of potholes,’’ he said.

Salisu added that the road would also assist in reducing the time spent on a journey and address the security challenges facing motorists.

Since the road was constructed by the administration of former Head of State, Retired Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, it had never witnessed a total rehabilitation work again.

When contacted, the Zonal Coordinator of the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA), in Kano, Mr Adedayo Adebayo said the maintenance of the road was a continuous exercise and would soon continue.

He gave the assurance that the maintenance work would resume before the end of April.
