A powerful earthquake struck Morocco on Friday night, killing more than 600 people and injuring hundreds more.

The 6.8-magnitude quake struck a mountainous area 72 kilometers (45 miles) southwest of the tourist hotspot Marrakesh.

The quake was felt in several other cities, including Rabat, Casablanca, and Essaouira.

Moroccan media reported that it was the most powerful quake to ever hit the country.

Tremors were so strong that they caused buildings to collapse and power outages. Many people fled their homes in fear.

The interior ministry said that the death toll had risen to 632, with more than half of the deaths in Al-Haouz and Taroudant provinces.

The ministry also recorded deaths in Ouarzazate, Chichaoua, Azilal, and Youssoufia provinces, as well as in Marrakesh, Agadir, and the Casablanca area.

Another 329 people were injured, including 51 in critical condition.

The government has activated emergency response plans and is providing assistance to those affected by the quake.

Survivors are in shock and many are still struggling to cope with the disaster. They are calling for help from the government and international aid organizations.
