The candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Monday Okpebholo, won the Edo State governorship election held on Saturday.
According to the results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission on Sunday, Okpebholo secured 291,667 votes, defeating his closest rival, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party, who garnered 247,655 votes.
Olumide Akpata, the Labour Party (LP) candidate, finished third with 22,763 votes.
With these results, Okpebholo is set to be declared the official winner of the election.
Meanwhile, the PDP in Edo has called on the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, to review the results before the final announcement. Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi, the PDP Chairman in Edo, told reporters on Sunday in Benin that there were discrepancies between the actual results uploaded on the INEC IREV at polling units and those collated by electoral officers. Aziegbemi alleged that the results were inflated in favor of the APC by reducing votes from the PDP.
The final declaration of the winner is now awaited as PDP raises concerns about the accuracy of the election results.
