The new Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, officially moved into the Speaker’s office at the Assembly Complex on Monday, January 27, 2025.

Videos shared on social media showed prayers and thanksgiving being held in her honor as she took charge of her new position.

Members of the Assembly accompanied Meranda to her office, where a prayer session was held for her and other lawmakers to ensure smooth leadership and unity in the House.

The plenary session scheduled for Monday was later adjourned by the Speaker, making it her third presided session since her appointment.

Meranda became Speaker after the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, was removed on January 13, 2025, by the majority of House members over allegations of misconduct and financial misappropriation.

Obasa, however, broke his silence on Saturday, insisting he remains the legitimate Speaker until due process is followed. He denied the allegations against him and challenged his colleagues to present evidence.

“I remain the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly,” Obasa said. “The claims made against me are baseless and have not been substantiated.”

Security at the Assembly Complex has been heightened amid speculations of possible tension during plenary sessions. The police have assured the public of peace and order at the Assembly.
