Nigerians have taken to social media to share their thoughts on the announcement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s official visit to France, set to begin on Wednesday.

According to a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, the three-day visit, at the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron, is aimed at deepening ties between Nigeria and France in sectors such as agriculture, education, health, security, energy, and youth development.

“This visit promises to yield significant benefits for Nigeria, as it focuses on strengthening political, economic, and cultural relations between both nations,” Onanuga stated.

During the visit, President Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu are expected to be welcomed at Les Invalides, a historic French military museum, and at the Élysée Palace.

The President will hold bilateral talks with President Macron to align strategies on youth skill development, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

“They will harmonize positions to stimulate interest in exchange programs focusing on automation, leadership, and capacity-building for Nigerian youths,” the statement added.

Additionally, the visit will feature discussions on finance, trade, solid minerals, and communication, with both leaders scheduled to attend a meeting of the France-Nigeria Business Council. The council aims to foster private-sector investment to boost economic growth.

The announcement has sparked a wave of reactions online, with many questioning the timing and purpose of the visit.

A user, #MahdiShehu, criticized the trip, saying, “So all along, his uncountable trips to France were for leisure and squandering of public money. Next invitation should please come from Malta and Chicago State University for a ‘Thank-You Visit’ and donation in appreciation.”

Another user, #BenSamuel, wrote, “It’s clear that BAT seems to cherish his newly acquired luxurious jet more than Aso Rock Villa. No sensible leader would prioritize global trips while the economy is in disarray. Ministers are meant to represent the government internationally, while a true leader focuses on addressing pressing national issues. For now, it’s the citizens who are left hungry and grappling with insecurity. When a child gets a new outfit, every outing feels like Christmas.”

#Rolex_Bless expressed skepticism about the visit, “What is Tinubu going to France to do? Does France mean well for Africa apart from exploiting its resources? Mumu Tinubu go dey do like villager who never travel before. Watin Macron fit offer Nigeria? Yeye people ruling a yeye country.”

Similarly, #Ikechewkubene remarked, “France again? It’s like the Nigerian government sees its position as a license to tour the world. Fixing the challenges facing Nigeria isn’t bothering this administration.”

#OyinatiBode warned about potential manipulation, “The president shouldn’t allow that manipulative Macron to drag us into assisting France in oppressing their former African colonies or into their conflict with Russia. We are not interested in cooperation that could lead us into their intended World War III. I know President Tinubu is smart, but it’s worth repeating—desperate colonial powers can’t be trusted.”
