Social commentator and renowned feminist, Ozzy Etomi, has attracted mixed reactions for “rudely” calling out her father on Twitter.
Trouble started when the opinionated feminist narrated how her father summoned her and her siblings for a family meeting without first consulting them.
According to Ozzy, her father does not have the right to summon grown adults, ages 28 – 37, who have things to do with their precious times.
She further said that Nigerian parents don’t realize their kids become adults and they must cut the cord.
Ozzy tweeted;
“My dad sent a text round to my siblings and I on sat night for us to convene to see him Sunday at 2pm. When noone showed because, adults with lives, he said
“THIS IS INDISCIPLINE”. Lmao. Nigerian parents don’t realize their kids become adults and they must cut the cord
“How can you summon grown adults aged 28 – 37 like we don’t have poo of our own going on.
“Sir, we will see you at a time that works with everyone’s schedule, till then you know what that meins.”
However, many Twitter users said Ozzy went too far by disrespecting her father on Twitter.
Some opined that Ozzy’s ego gets the better part of her hence she doesn’t have regards for any man which includes her biological father.
Some also came to her defence saying everyone is guilty of disrespecting their parents.
Many also said the Nigerian custom does not encourage a child regardless of his or her age to openly disrespect their parents.
WuzupNaija reports that Ozzy Etomi had once said that she is refused to adopt her husband’s name because “I do not want to be passed on like a bottle of whisky from father to husband, switching names according to which man I now belong.
“The first time, I had no choice, I was born with that identity, but now as an adult, I have a choice of whether I choose to change my identity along with my marital status.
“I am super uninterested in the shitload of paperwork required. I am very close to my family; I am secure in my name. I know that my family has my back.
“Heaven forbid if something were to happen to my husband, or in the case of a divorce? I then hastily erase his name and tack on whatever new name another man has blessed me with? Women are out here getting re-branded more times than Google”.
See some comments from Twitter:
God Please protect Ozzy Etomi’s dad because one bastard is anticipating his death just because her personal life plans wasn’t in sync with her dad’s impromptu plans.

May we never sow seeds that would make us reap abominations as that ozzy etomi for children. May we never have offsprings that would drag us on social media after being faithful guardians of their path. It all starts with us. Choose your spouse WISELY and without sentiments….

…attract the right souls, from the Light and not from the Darkness. Ladies, be careful where you visit, especially at night in the first 6 months of each of your pregnancies, to avoid such unfortunate products and stories that touch social media in future. I wish us all well.

Maybe Ozzy Etomi’s constructive tweet may have sounded a tad rude, but still it doesn’t invalidate her point.
Adults have a life and schedule too and sometimes they all can’t be at a particular place in a given period, simple.

I’ve lost both my parents and I still see the validity of Ozzy’s tweet. Make her matter no kill una on these streets oh.

why are you guys dragging Ozzy Etomi? Y’all knowingly missing the point & it shows
“we’ll come in a time that works with the schedule of everyone” & that just it!!!
If you’re a doctor & your dad summons you on a day that you have a scheduled surgery, you’d def have to push it.

Ozzy’s tweet was so contextually vague that it’s almost impossible to read without plugging in your own bias & running with it.

Is it ozzy you people are minding?
Someone that nut has removed from her head since..
She craves attention.
An attention whore..
Where else is she going to get her everyday dose of validation from? ??— Aniuchi Adaobi (@AniuchiA) April 5, 2019
Lmao Ozzy you’ve entered it again with this tweet. You don’t know that parents are “gods” in Nigeria? No way will people even sit down and get the point before saying “but they’re you’re parents….”

Not particularly. I think #Ozzy only sounded like she genuinely doesn’t care about her father. She had a valid point but she said it like she was talking about her boyfriend. This is your father you are talking about. Not meeting him when he needs you shouldn’t be celebrated.

What part in Ozzy’s tweet don’t we understand that you people are saying? The issue is clear, your father called you and your siblings and you don’t care to show up? You did not stop there, you came here to diss him. That’s sad, i pray my children never get to do that to me .

Who actually cares about your dead fathers right now? Of what relevance is their passing to the story of Ozzy, her dad and her siblings?

Re Ozzy’s tweet:
Something I think about a lot is how I actually prefer family/power structures where you honour your superiors
But Nigerians abuse this because they forget the superior also has a duty of care to honour their junior
Without mutual honour, you lose your mandate

A lot of people are using this as an opportunity to show that if their parents hit them up Saturday night for a Sunday meeting, they’d abandon their kids, spouses, schedules to attend….and while these may be good kids, they are also most likely terrible adults. https://t.co/YXz0CKC8g9

If someone else had tweeted the same thing Ozzy tweeted I wonder if this would have been the reaction, like we haven't all refused our parents calls or reschedule meetings with them at one point or another.
