The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has directed an immediate and comprehensive investigation into allegations of theft and other criminal activities at the Okere Correctional Centre in Warri, Delta State.
This follows recent media reports exposing alleged misconduct within the facility, raising concerns about security lapses and possible corruption among prison officials.
In a statement issued on Tuesday through his aide, Babatunde Alao, the minister condemned the alleged infractions and reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining discipline within Nigeria’s correctional system.
“I will not allow indiscipline to fester under my nose. Any officer found wanting will face the full weight of the law. The leadership of the Nigerian Correctional Service must provide explanations,” Tunji-Ojo declared.
The minister’s stance signals a tough approach to accountability, as he warned that any personnel implicated in wrongdoing would be dealt with decisively.
The allegations have sparked public concern, with many calling for urgent reforms in Nigeria’s correctional facilities.
The Okere Correctional Centre, like many others across the country, has faced reports of poor management, overcrowding, and security challenges in the past.
Tunji-Ojo assured Nigerians that the government remains committed to transparency and accountability. He urged members of the public to come forward with any information that could assist the investigation.
“We take these allegations seriously and will not tolerate any form of misconduct within our correctional facilities,” he stated.
