The Minister of Women’s Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, has strongly condemned a viral video in which a young woman, reportedly a social media content creator, is seen using her mentally unstable mother for personal gain.
The video, which has caused widespread outrage online, shows the woman filming and interacting with her mother, who appears visibly unwell and disheveled.
In a statement released on her X page on Monday, the Minister expressed her deep concern about the video, describing it as “unacceptable and potentially harmful.” She emphasized that such exploitation is “highly condemnable” and goes against the values of empathy and care.
“We condemn the disturbing video report of a woman’s mental illness being exploited by her daughter for personal gain and social media content,” Kennedy-Ohanenye wrote. “This is unacceptable, potentially harmful, and troubling.”
She further stressed the importance of compassion and understanding for those suffering from mental health issues, stating, “We strongly condemn exploiting vulnerable individuals, especially those struggling with mental health issues. Mental illness demands compassion, understanding, and support – not ridicule or exploitation.”
The Minister also called for immediate action to protect the woman featured in the video. “The Federal Ministry of Women Affairs urgently request information about the mother’s identity and condition to ensure proper care and protection,” she stated, adding that a reward is being offered for anyone who can assist in locating the woman.
Kennedy-Ohanenye concluded her statement with a call to the public: “Appropriate actions must be taken to address this situation. We call on everyone to respect the dignity and humanity of those facing mental health issues and report similar instances immediately. Let’s work together to prevent exploitation and support those who need it most.”
The Minister’s statement has resonated with many, as people continue to express their outrage and concern over the treatment of the mentally unstable woman in the video.
