Military pensions board raises alarm over fake WhatsApp group

The Military Pensions Board has warned pensioners and the public to beware of a fake WhatsApp group created in its name.

In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja, the board’s Public Relations Officer, Aliyu Mohammed, said the group titled “Military Pensions Board” was set up by unknown individuals and does not represent the agency.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the MPB communicates with pensioners and stakeholders strictly through its official social media handles, press releases, official statements, and recognized communication channels,” Mohammed said.

He stressed that the board has not created any WhatsApp group for pensioners or veterans, describing those behind the platform as fraudsters.

Security experts note that scammers increasingly use social media and messaging apps to impersonate government agencies and mislead vulnerable groups. Retired personnel and veterans have often been targets of such schemes, with false promises or attempts to obtain money under the guise of official communication.

Mohammed assured that the welfare of retired military personnel remains a top priority for the MPB. He urged pensioners to always confirm any information through the board’s official contacts.

The Military Pensions Board is responsible for managing and paying pensions and gratuities to retired military personnel and their families. In recent years, it has introduced digital systems to improve efficiency and transparency.

Despite these efforts, the rise of fake online platforms has forced repeated warnings from government institutions urging citizens to remain alert and avoid falling victim to scams.
