2016 Olympics: Mikel rescues Nigerian team with huge cash donation

Team Nigeria captain to the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, John Mikel Obi has come to the rescue of the cash-starved Nigerian football team to the Olympics.

According to AfricanFootball.com, Mikel has reportedly donated $30,000 to the Dream Team VI squad currently in camp in Atlanta, USA.

It was gathered from one of the players that the Dream team have been taking care of themselves in Atlanta from their own purse before the Chelsea star came to their rescue.

“Mikel has donated $30,000 to the team. You know we have not received money since we left Nigeria,” the player told AfricanFootball.com.

The national U-23 coach Samson Siasia had earlier pleaded with the Nigerian football authorities to come their rescue as they were cash-trapped in their base in Atlanta.

It was learnt that an unnamed Nigerian based in Atlanta footed the bills of the team in their first 10-days in the United States.

The Rio Games begin in August 6 but the football matches start on August 3.

Nigeria will play Sweden, Japan and Colombia when the football event of the Rio Olympic Games begins.
