Sokoto students stone female colleague to death over alleged blasphemy

Published

A female student of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, was gruesomely murdered on the school premises by her colleagues over alleged blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad.

The victim, identified as Deborah, a Hausa Christian, was said to have sent a blasphemous voice note to their academic WhatsApp group and was asked to rescind her statement and apologise.

WuzupNigeria gathered that some students uploaded quranic contents in the group and the victim had urged them to stop posting such content.

She was said to have been warned and threatened to be dealt with if she doesn’t mind her business, leading to her voice note.

“Holy ghost fire, there is nothing that will happen to them. This group was created for academic purposes, not for rubbish things. Prophet of God as how? Nonsense,” Deborah said in the voice note posted to the group in Hausa.

After refusing to apologise, she was attacked, stoned, and beaten to death by a mob who eventually burnt her corpse as shouts of ‘Allahu Akbar’ a phrase used by Muslims meaning ‘God is most great’, rented the air.

An anonymous source told WuzupNigeria that security officials of the college tried to prevent the incident but were overpowered by the mob who were seen carrying out the gruesome attack in a video which surfaced online.

“The security of the school wanted to intervene but the students overwhelmed them,” our source said.

One of the attackers was seen in the video boasting about partaking in the murder.

Speaking in Hausa, the attack, as interpreted by our source said, “I’m the one that burnt her, the matches I’m holding is what I used to lit the fire.”
