A staff member of a microfinance bank in Abeokuta, Olagoke Dare, has been arrested by operatives of the Ogun State Police Command for plotting with an accomplice to steal three million naira belonging to his employers.
He was apprehended when the security operatives at Ibara Divisional Police Headquarters got a distress call that armed robbers had assaulted Olagoke Dare and Mary Agbejo as they exited a commercial bank in the Oke-ilewo area, where they had gone to withdraw money.
When the distress call came in, the DPO Ibara division, SP Segun Ajao, swiftly organised his men and rushed to the site, where one Idowu Tunde was apprehended with the help of members of the public.
During questioning, the apprehended suspect, who was armed with a fake gun, told the police that it was Olagoke Dare who instructed him that his employer would be sending him and one other person to withdraw three million naira, and that they should come and rob them of the money.
The detained suspect went on to say that it was Dare Olagoke who supplied him the toy gun he used for the operation.
While they got into the car, Idowu Tunde explained that he came out suddenly from the back seat and pointed the gun at the lady who was in possession of the money, but said that the lady noticed the gun did not look original and then she dragged the gun with him and raised alarm.
It was the alarm that attracted people who pursued him and called the police.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the state police command, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the acting commissioner of police, DCP Abiodun Alamutu, has ordered the immediate transfer of the two suspects to state criminal investigation and intelligence department for discreet investigation.
He then advised that companies should endeavour to always have background checks on their staff before employing them.
