The Police on Wednesday arraigned a 52-year-old man, Edwin Anidi, before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, over alleged fraud and assault.
Anidi of no fixed residential address is facing three charges of fraud, stealing and assault.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
The prosecutor, ASP Clement Okuoimose told the court that the defendant committed the offences on March 31, at 2:00p.m. at Balogun Market, Trade Fair Complex, Lagos State.
Okuoimose said that the defendant obtained the sum of N280, 000 from the complainant, one Obiageli Ike under the pretence that he would help her rent a shop, which he did not.
“The defendant also converted the N280, 000 to his personal use.
“The defendant attacked the complainant and stabbed her with a broken bottle on her hand causing her body injury.
“Anidi also assaulted the complainant by tearing her dress which valued at N5, 000.
“It was when the complainant saw him and asked for her money and shop that the defendant started assaulting her.
“He was arrested and handed over to the Police for prosecution,” he said.
According to him, the offences contravened Sections 314, 287, 172 and 339 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
Section 287 stipulates three years jail term for stealing.
The Chief Magistrate, Fadahunsi Adefioye, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100, 000 with one surety in like sum.
Adefioye said that the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction with evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
The chief magistrate adjourned the case until May 11, for mention.
