*Ondo hunter kills 70-year-old neighbour he mistook for animal*
A local hunter, Ismaila Ojo, has reportedly shot dead a 70-year-old villager at Ita-Merin, a village near Ore in Ondo State.
Ojo was said to have carried out the act while the victim was defecating in the bush at the back of the house.
While testing his gun, SaharaReporters reported that the hunter mistook the septuagenarian whom he identified as his neighbour for an animal.
Parading the suspect in Akure, the newly deployed Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Oyeyemi Oyediran, said the hunter was picked up by operatives with his dane gun.
In his statement, the suspect confessed to having shot the aged man around 3am but insisted that he mistakenly took the victim for an animal in the night.
Ojo, who claimed to be a registered hunter, said he was the one that raised the alarm after he mistakenly shot the aged man and he afterwards took him to the near farm settlement for medical attention.
A sober-looking Ojo, who disclosed that the victim died few days after the incident, swore that he would not have raised the alarm for help if he did it deliberately.
“I have never committed a crime in my life; everybody knows me as a hunter; I don’t know how animals turned to human being. Have mercy on me,” he said.
