Court sentences man to death by hanging over culpable homicide

A 36-year-old father of two identified as Monday Joshua Okon has been sentenced to death by hanging for the abduction of a three-year-old pupil from her school at Mbierebe Obio, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital.

DailyPost reported that an Akwa Ibom State High Court, sitting in Uyo, on Thursday, also handed sentenced his accomplice, one Cecilia Thompson Ebong, to five years imprisonment for her role in the abduction and attempted child trafficking.

Okon was said to have kidnapped the victim on 20th July 2018, during a graduation party in the school and held her in his house in Ibesikpo for three days.

However, Okon and Ebong were transporting the victim to Aba, on July 24, 2018, for a standby child buyer when they were caught.

According to reports, Ebong who claimed to be the child's grandmother helped Okon to hold the child inside a tricycle they boarded to AKTC Park, but a good Samaritan spotted the child covered with a cloth and raised an alarm at Aka Road-IBB Roundabout in Uyo,, leading to their arrest.

Okon was said to have confessed that he was to deliver the child to an Igbo woman, 42-year-old Charity Nwachukwu.

He also confessed that he had previously sold a male child to Nwachukwu in 2017 and was paid fifty thousand naira.

In its judgement, the Court ordered that Monday Okon should die by hanging, while it sentenced Cecilia Thompson Ebong, a 44-year-old native of Ikot Offiong Nsit, in Nsit Ibom Local Government Area, to five years in prison
