A 73-year-old man Ohalete Jogoji, escaped being lynched by angry youths in Imo State for killing his immediate younger brother, Augustine Jogoji, over a land dispute.
The PUNCH reported that Ohalete, who has since been arrested, confessed to murdering Augustine whom he claimed to have hacked to death while sleeping.
Ohalate was subsequently stripped naked by some angry youths around the Amaraku Junction, in the Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State, where the incident happened, threatening to beat him.
However, he was rescued by some other youths, led by one Bathram Uwandu, before turning him over to the police command headquarters in Owerri.
According to Uwandu, “This man attacked his brother yesterday (Sunday) while everybody was watching the Chelsea versus Liverpool match. Before help could come, the man had died. We have deposited his body in a mortuary.”
Confessing in Igbo language at the station, Ohalete said, “I was angry that he took the only land belonging to our family. Instead of me to be in possession of the only portion of land as the first son, he possessed it. I got angry and attacked him.”
The suspect’s daughter, who identified herself as Nkiru, expressed shock over her father's action as she confirmed that her father and his younger brother used to have minor issues.
The Public Relations Officer of the police command, Micheal Abattam, has been unreachable for comments on the incident.
