Confusion as Abeokuta deacon slumps, dies while preaching against blood money

A regular Sunday service at the Evangelical Church Winning All, Onikoko, Abeokuta, Ogun State, had an irregular closing after a deacon died while dishing out a sermon to the congregation.

Deacon Francis Ogunnusi was said to be preaching against rituals and blood money - the get-rich-quick syndrome is fast becoming a norm in society - at the ECWA headquarters in Ogun.

Ogunnusi, while preaching in Yoruba, said, “The money you make through unlawful means, killing people, sucking human blood, when death comes, it will belong to another person.”

He was about to have his words translated into the English language by the interpreter when he fell to the ground with the microphone in his hand.

The unexpected incident turned the Sunday service into a rowdy session as confused church members rushed him to the Federal Medical Centre, Idi Aba, Abeokuta, where he was pronounced dead.

A member of the church, who spoke on conditions of anonymity said, “The man was not the pastor of that church; he was just an elder. He was the Baale of Onikoko. He was the one that delivered the sermon on Sunday.

“He was talking about death and people who made money by killing other people. All of a sudden, he collapsed. He was rushed to the FMC, where he died. We don’t know what happened. I was very scared. Everything was disrupted. We just said the grace and went home.”

As of the time of filing this report, it is unknown whether Ogunnsi who was the Baale of the Onikoko community, near the Panseke area of Abeokuta, had an underlying ailment prior to the incident.

However, the source revealed that the deceased was between 60 and 70 years old.
