Fast-rising singer, Adedamola Adefolahan, fondly referred to as Fireboy DML, keeps blazing hot ever since he was signed to YBNL records owned by ace rap artiste, Olamide, in 2018.

In 2019, Fireboy released his first official single, Jealous, which stayed on numerous chats in Nigeria for months.

The song, which was released about a year ago, has about one million views on YouTube alone.

Between November 25, 2019, and August 19, 2020, the young lad released two albums; Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps, and Apollo.

His two body of works garnered positive reviews and has seen him achieve astronomical feats, which makes him eligible to sit on the ‘big boys’ table in the Nigerian music industry.

For instance, his outing at the 14th edition of the prestigious The Headies award shows that Fireboy DML is truly on fire as he clinched five awards.

He is certainly starting his year on a high note as the singer made history as he equalled Wande Coal and Psquare’s record for most wins in a night at The Headies award.

The YBNL artiste was the biggest winner at the 14th edition of Headies. He bagged the award for the BEST R&B ALBUM with his LAUGHTER, TEARS AND GOOSEBUMPS, beating Sarz and Wurld, Praiz, Chike, Tiwa Savage.

The sonorous singer also beat industry heavyweight like Davido, Burna Boy, Yemi Alade, Adekunle Gold to clinch the Best POP Album with his project titled Apollo.

Fireboy got the BEST R&B SINGLE award with his song, Tattoo. Once again, he proudly rose that night to receive the nod for The HEADIES REVELATION awards.

He, however, crowned the night by defeating top stars including Burna Boy, Adekunle Gold, Brymo, and Chike to claim the Album of The Year award.

Before his impressive outing last night, the singer made headlines a few days ago when he made his debut on US late-night TV with a performance on The Tonight Show, Starring Jimmy Fallon.

The star performed a medley of ‘Champion,’ from his latest studio album Apollo, and his 2019 track ‘Vibration’ from ‘Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps’ and was joined by a full band and a pair of dancers for the performance.

By performing on Jimmy Fallon Tonight, he follows in the footsteps of Burna Boy, Davido and Tiwa Savage.

More so, on September 24, 2020, when German football club, Bayern Munich, won the UEFA Super Cup as they beat Spanish football club, Sevilla, they used Champion by Fireboy DML as their theme song.

The song is in his second studio album, Apollo.

Another highlight of his career in 2020 was when gaming company, EA Sports, announced that his song, Scatter, off his first album, Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps, would be featured in FIFA 2021 official soundtracks.

According to the game maker, Fireboy’s ‘Scatter’ will feature on the main football soundtrack.

With two albums to his credit, numerous awards and impressive achievements, it is obvious that the young man is taking the right steps in the right direction.

In an appreciation tweet, the singer gave thanks to God, his fans and YBNL for his successful outing last night.

He wrote, “All glory to Jah. My fans, you’re special. I love you, thank you. YBNL! This is for you. Gratitude to my Empire family, big love. Thank you to The Headies for the recognition and everyone who voted. Congrats to all nominees and winners.”

The reason behind his gratitude to the YBNL record label owned by iconic rap artiste, Olamide, is not far-fetched as the platform shot him to the limelight.

Olamide is not only a big fish in the Nigerian music industry, he is known for spotting and creating talents who have become superstars in the industry.

He has shot to fame the likes of Adekunle Gold, Lil Kesh, Victor, DJ Enimoney, amongst others, via his YBNL platform.

In 2018, he signed Fireboy DML, and ever since, the young man has been blazing hot.

While the artiste enjoys stardom today, things were not always rosy for him at the beginning of his career.

In an interview with MTV Base, he revealed that his parents were not initially in support of his career but they were later convinced when he began to succeed.

He further said that shortly after school, he came to Lagos from Ile-Ife and had to squat with friends.

“I grew up in Abeokuta, Ogun state in a normal family of five. My dad and mother, two brothers and myself. An average family, to be honest, nothing serious, a simple life. I went to school and returned home but spent most of my time alone.

“That is how I found out that I could write and sing and that was the beginning of my finding purpose in life. I went to school at Obafemi Awolowo University and that was when I found music.

“I started writing poems when I was about 13 years old. But in my second year in University, I just found myself in the studio with my friends. I knew I could sing but I did not see music as a profession. I made a song while we were joking and when I got to my dormitory, I listened to the song and realised it sounded great.

“For the first time in a long time, I felt alive and I just knew that I had found purpose. Since then, it has been music. My grades began to shake but it was worth it; I graduated. I took music seriously when I finished school.”

Fireboy further stated that at a point, his father mentioned that he was disappointed in him.

“It was a switch for my parents, a very big switch; from a child who looked like he will end up as a professor to someone that just woke up and said he wants to be a musician. It took some time for them to get used to it,” he said.

According to him, he was able to convince his parents due to his success, adding that his parents are his biggest PR at the moment.
