The Sokoto State Government has raised alarm over the continued use of harmful traditional practices in treating cases of metal poisoning, urging residents to seek proper medical care instead.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Wurno, condemned a particular practice where incisions are made on patients’ stomachs as a supposed remedy. He insisted that the method must be discontinued immediately, emphasizing that such practices do more harm than good.

“The practice of making incisions on the stomach of patients suffering from metal poisoning must stop immediately. Instead, those showing symptoms should be rushed to hospitals for proper medical care,” Wurno stated during the presentation of government-supplied drugs for metal poisoning treatment at General Hospital, Tureta.

Represented by the Executive Director of the State Hospital Services Management Board, Dr. Bello Attahiru, Wurno assured residents that the state government had made adequate provisions for the treatment of affected persons.

He said the newly supplied drugs would be distributed to all general hospitals handling metal poisoning cases.

Receiving the medical supplies, the Chairman of Tureta Local Government Council, Alhaji Aliyu Tureta, welcomed the intervention and described the provision of the drugs as timely.

He assured the state government that the medicines would be properly utilized to ensure that those in need received the necessary treatment.
