Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is set to cut about 600 jobs from its artificial intelligence unit as part of efforts to streamline its operations after a period of heavy recruitment.
Reports from the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times on Wednesday said the job cuts would not affect the TBD Lab, which was established by Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg.
The TBD Lab, known for attracting top researchers from OpenAI and Apple with lucrative offers, will remain untouched as the company focuses on restructuring other AI teams.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the layoffs will mainly affect teams working on AI products and infrastructure. The company plans to improve efficiency while maintaining progress on its key projects. Some of the affected workers may be reassigned to other departments.
The New York Times described the move as part of efforts to tackle “organizational bloat” following Meta’s aggressive hiring for its AI program.
A memo cited in the reports from Meta’s Chief AI Officer, Alexandr Wang, said the restructuring would allow for “fewer conversations to make decisions,” suggesting a leaner management process.
Meta has yet to issue an official statement on the job cuts.
