Argentine star, Lionel Messi, is set to sign a new long-term contract with boyhood club Barcelona on Thursday, August 5, 2021.

According to Goal, the deal was boosted by a massive injection of funds (of about €2.7 billion (£2.3bn/$3.2bn) loan from CVC Capital Partners, with a majority percentage to be distributed to each club) received by La Liga to help clubs recover from the economic issues caused by the coronavirus.

Barcelona is expected to receive €280m (£238m/$331m) from La Liga, with €42m (£36m/$50m) of that figure being allocated to transfers and wages, meaning that the Messi renewal is able to be completed.

About Nessi’s new Barca contract

The 34-year-old is expected to sign a five-year deal which would put an end to months of speculation that he could be leaving Barcelona and the new contract is expected to be announced by Barca on August 5.

Recall that Barcelona allowed his mega-money deal to run out at the end of the season in order to begin fresh talks and according to Marca, the 34-year-old will take a 50 per cent pay cut to stay in Catalonia.

Further reports revealed that there is an option for the contract to be unilaterally terminated in 2023, as reported by L’Esportiu de Catalunya, without the player having to pay a termination clause.

According to BleacherReport, Messi’s new contract also reportedly has a termination clause of £320 million ($444 million).

The Argentine who recently won the Copa America scored 38 goals in 47 matches across all competitions last season and would be expected to do more next season.
