Lionel Messi has suggested that the 2026 World Cup could be his last, after scoring twice in Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Venezuela in Buenos Aires.

The 37-year-old forward, who thrilled fans with goals in the 39th and 80th minutes, admitted that age may force him to step away from international football soon.

“Same as I said before about the World Cup that I don’t think I’ll play another,” Messi told reporters. “Because of my age, the most logical thing is that I won’t make it. But well, we’re almost there so I’m excited and motivated to play it.”

Messi said playing in front of home fans was always special for him. “Being able to finish this way here is what I’ve always dreamed of. I’ve experienced a lot of things on this pitch, both good and not so good, but it’s always a joy to play in Argentina, in front of our fans.”

The Inter Miami star noted that he is focusing on staying fit while keeping his future options open. “Day by day, trying to feel good and above all, being honest with myself. Hopefully I’ll have a good preseason in 2026 and finish this MLS season well and then I’ll decide,” he added.

Lautaro Martínez also found the net for Argentina, while a Messi hat-trick was denied by an offside call.

With the win, Argentina remain top of South America’s qualification table with 38 points. Uruguay, Colombia and Paraguay have also secured qualification, joining Brazil and Ecuador.
