The Lagos State Government has rescued a mentally challenged woman accused of disturbing residents in the Agege area following a viral video that sparked public concern over her behaviour.
The intervention came after a video circulated online earlier this week, showing a distressed resident pleading with authorities to intervene and rescue the neighbourhood from the alleged harassment caused by the woman.
In the video, the narrator, who filmed from a nearby building, claimed that the woman—identified as residing at No. 31 Adedosu Street, Agege—had been throwing stones into houses and wielding dangerous objects, including a machete and a knife.
“This mentally challenged individual will throw stones from one house to another. She also has a machete, knife, and other harmful tools. She said she has a gun. Come and save us from Ibukun Coker; we don’t want to die untimely in this neighbourhood,” the resident cried out in Yoruba.
The speaker, whose identity has yet to be confirmed, further alleged that the woman’s actions had made life unbearable for residents in the area.
“Our children can’t play around because she throws stones. We’ve reported to several agencies, but they haven’t responded,” the resident added.
Reacting to the incident on Friday, Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, confirmed in a post on his verified X handle that officials from the ministry’s Rescue Team had responded to the call and evacuated the woman from the area for medical evaluation and rehabilitation.
“She has been taken to one of our centres for care. I urge the public to continue reporting any incidents requiring government intervention. We remain committed to ensuring social stability in Lagos. Let’s work together to make a difference,” Ogunlende wrote.
The commissioner reiterated that the state government remains dedicated to protecting vulnerable persons while ensuring peace and order across communities.
The Ministry of Youth and Social Development also encouraged residents to report similar cases through its emergency channels, assuring that no complaint concerning public safety or welfare would be ignored.
