A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, Dino Melaye, has urged President Bola Tinubu to step down, citing what he described as the administration’s failure to effectively address Nigeria’s growing insecurity challenges.
Melaye expressed concern that citizens are facing increasingly dangerous conditions, accusing the president of offering little more than unfulfilled assurances on security. In a video shared on his X account, the former Kogi West senator painted a grim picture of the nation’s current state.
He said: “We live in perilous times, times of resistance and vacillation. We are actually living in Egypt but by the grace of God we are heading to Canaan.
“Today I want to speak to the insecurity issues in our country and it’s a pitiable situation.”
Continuing his criticism, Melaye described the administration in harsh terms, stating: “Tinubu’s administration is structurally, methodologically, and economically impotent. Tinubu is the architect of empty promises, Tinubu superintended and supervised daily killings of Nigerians without abatement.
“Brigadier General Musa Uba was killed like a chicken and nothing happened since September 2025, five months after the killing of Musa, Brigadier General Husseini Ibrahima was killed and Tinubu is so comfortable.”
He further referenced constitutional obligations, emphasizing that the government’s primary duty is to ensure citizens’ safety and well-being. According to him: “The constitution that Tinubu swore to is very clear, that the primary occupation of government shall be the security and welfare of the people.
“Today there is no welfare not to talk of security. Tinubu has woefully failed in this respect. My advice to Tinubu is to resign, he is wearing an oversized shoe, so Mr Tinubu resign.”
Melaye also argued that the country’s armed forces have lost their effectiveness under the current administration. He said: “Two brigade Commanders were killed within five months in Nigeria and the military under the APC have lost the monopoly of the legitimate use of force.
“Disaster is the harvest and you will reap when you have an incompetent leadership like that of Tinubu. The military that can’t protect its general can not protect you and I.”
Lamenting Nigeria’s reliance on foreign assistance, Melaye described the situation as a national embarrassment, noting that the country now seeks help from nations such as United States and Turkey. He stated: “My beloved Nigeria is now a begger of security, begging America, begging Turkey for security and it’s a big shame.
“Country that fought in Angola, fought in Sumaila, Sudan, Liberia, and in other Western countries, Today is begging for security.
“We as a country now are outsourcing the protection of the country and our people. Giant of Africa, are we really an independent nation?”
He concluded by highlighting the widespread fear across the country, describing kidnapping as pervasive and affecting all aspects of daily life. Melaye said: “Kidnapping is now a national industry in this country, school children are not safe, people in their houses are not safe, people in their place of worship are not safe, and people in their farms are not safe.
“Those supporting APC should know that kidnappers, bandits, Boko Haram will not ask you for your party membership card before striking.
“All I say to Tinubu is this, you can’t govern the people you don’t love or care about. You don’t love us Mr Tinubu, we will vote you out, after all, Lagos is not Nigeria,” he added.
