Meet the Nollywood actress who smashed the short put record in Rio

On Sunday eveningย Nigeriaโ€™s shot putter, Lauritta Onye smashed the world record at the Rio 2016 Paralympics with her fourth round massive 8.40m throw.

Tunisia’s Abdelli Rima came a distant second with a 7.37 and Lara Baars won bronze with a 7.12 throw.
It comes as ย no surprise at all as the 32-year-old who is also a Nollywood actress is the countryโ€™s most successful dwarf athlete.

She had carved a niche for herself in Nollywood, featuring in prominent roles in films like Lords of Money, before becoming an athlete in 2007.It was no surprise the 32-year-old cartwheeled with joy as the results were confirmed. She also did some ย buddy shaking to celebrate her new world record.

The fair-skinned lady, who also competes in the women’s discuss event, won her first international medalโ€”silverโ€” at the 2011 All Africa Games. Last October, she won gold (Nigeriaโ€™s only medal) at the 7th IPC Athletics World Championships.

The Imo State-born athlete, who is popularly known as Laury White in Nollywood, was among athletes rewarded by President Muhammadu Buhari in February this year.
